Shield parted per pale; at dexter Or three flax plants in fess, blossomed Azure, leafed Vert and eradicated Argent; at sinister Gules two nailer's hammers Argent in saltire.
Meaning:
Sonthofen gained the rights of a market town in 1429 and of a city in 1963. Flax and hammers are representing the most important local business lines. The flax is symbolising the production of linen since the 16th century, until it was replaced by cotton in the 19th century. Also since the 16th century forged nails had been produced in the town. The tinctures of the shield had been white and blue, the Bavarian colours, since 1838. They were replaced in 1949 by the original local tinctures red and gold, probably alluding to the Barons of Rettenberg.

The arms were granted on 2 March 1838 by King Ludwig I of Bayern and confirmed on 4 January 1949 by Minister of Interior of Bayern. The banner was approved on 4 January 1949 by Minister of Interior of Bayern.
