The county comprises the area east of Nürnberg, its seat is Lauf upon Pegnitz. The former counties of Nürnberg, Hersbruck (no proper banner) and Lauf upon Pegnitz (no proper banner) merged in 1972 to form the new Nürnberger Land County. The arms show the lesser arms of the Free Imperial City of Nürnberg, which was also present in the three shields of the other former counties. The demi-millwheel in base is a new symbol and is representing the many watermills alongside the Pegnitz River, which had been of great economical importance in the past.

The banner was approved 11 January 1988 and the coat of arms on 1 October 1974 by district governor (Regierungspräsident) of Mittelfranken.
