Shield Argent parted by a centred cross Sable, over all two keys Gules in saltire.
Meaning:
The city belonged to the Archbishopric of Klön, symbolised by the black cross. The oldest city seals from 1249 and 1308 displayed St.Mary, sitting on a throne and holding the models of a city and a church. On the secret seal from 1341 the church was replaced by the arms. The tinctures are known since 1483. The origin of the keys of St. Peter is doubtful. They are considered to be symbols of the Archbishopric of Trier, which held clerical rights in the city. Andernach lost the status of a city under the rule of Emperor Napoleon I of France, but regained its city rights in 1857. The old city colours had been blue-white in the 19th century, later red-white-black, afterwards black-white-red and finally black-red since 1924.
