Shield Argent, on top of a mount Vert a stag statant Gules holding a bunch of grapes Or with stem Vert by his muzzle, issuant from sinister flanch a deciduous tree Vert. The arms are currently used on a French shield with mural crown on top, meanders and strings of bells on either side.
Meaning:
Prints of local seals exist since 1465. But the oldest seal probably was made long before in the 14th century. The Archbishopric of Mainz ruled the city until 1802 and granted city rights in 1317, confirmed in 1345. All local seals only displayed the wheel of the archbishopric, also later seals until 1814, when the city was part of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, a French puppet state. The current pattern probably was adopted arbitrarily in 1818. The pattern remained basically the same since then, just the tree sometimes was omitted or interpreted as a grapevine.
