Shield parted per fess intoOr over Azure, a lion rampant in counterchanged colours, armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
The city developed around the Braunfels Castle, which had been erected by the Counts of Solms-Braunfels, since 1743 Princes, in 1250. Beneath the castle the settlements Tal (= valley) and Hinterrtal (= behind the valley) were founded, they gained privileges in 1607 (Tal) and 1645 (Hintertal). Since then the settlements had been denoted as city.The lion is taken from the arms of the Solms with counterchanged colours in base, in order to distinguish the arms of the city from those of the family.
The arms were approved in 1937 by Oberpräsident of Prussian province Hessen-Nassau and again on 14 October 1982.
