Introduction

According to source the municipality was established on 1 July 1969, when the former subcounties (German: /Ämter/) of Aldekerk (incl. Stenden) and Nieukerk (incl. Eyll) had been united. Both names sound really Dutch, meaning "old church", "new church" and "churches".

Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale. On the dexter side in a red field is a silver (=white) church, below the church is a medlar blossom of the same colour. On the sinister side in a silver (= white) field is a red church, below the church is a medlar blossom of the same colour.
Meaning:
According to source the towers are those of the parish churches of Nieukerk and Aldekerk, their colours are also alluding to the colours of the stones of both buildings. The medlar blossoms are symbolizing the former municipalities of Eyll and Stenden and they are also symbolizing the dukes of Geldern.
