Kulmbach Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; at dexter quartered of Argent and Sable; at sinister Azure, above a lion passant guardant Argent armed and tongued Gules, beneath an eagle Argent armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
Kulmbach had the characteristics of a city since the 13th century and had been a residence of the Zollern kin since 1397. Nevertheless the existence of seals has been proven not before the middle of the 15th century. The current pattern was displayed on seals until 1569, in a city guide from 1530 and on architectural sculptures until the end of the 16th century. Eagle and lion are taken from the arms of the Counts of Andechs-Meranien and their heirs, the Counts of Orlamünde. Since 1819 both animals were erroneously considered as belonging to the Zollern kin. In 1819 the tinctures were changed as follows: The dexter half was quartered of blue and white, the lion was red in a black field and the eagle was white in a red field. In 1922 the old tinctures were restored.
