Schwarzach Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a bend Sable flanked by two triplets of squares Gules in bend and charged with a flag quartered of Argent and Gules fixed by a lance Or.
Meaning:
Schwarzach upon Main was established by a merger of Düllstadt, Gerlachshausen, Hörblach, Münsterschwarzach, Schwarzenau and Stadtschwarzach. It kept the status of a market town from Stadtschwarzach. The quartered flag is taken from the arms of Stadtschwarzach, where it had been placed into a blue shield. Stadtschwarzach had proper seals since the 14th century. The first seal displayed croziers in saltire, alluding to Münsterschwarzach Abbey, the former local ruler. During the following centuries the influence of the Bishopric of Würzburg increased continuously. The second seal from the 15th century displayed the quartered flag of the bishopric and the crossed croziers in a shield parted per pale. The current arms are based on the third seal from the 16th century, which displayed the quartered flag in a broad (black) fess. Since 1531 the bishopric is the only local ruler and manorial lord. Rolls of arms from 1544 and 1593 displayed the same pattern. Since the 17th century the flag again was depicted alone, e.g. by Otto Hupp and by Siebmacher (1856). The black (German: schwarz) colour of the bend nowadays is considered to be canting. The colours red and white are those of Franken. Each square is representing one of the six former municipalities
