Coat of Arms

Baroque shield Azure, a morion Sable, plugged on by two flags quartered of Argent and Gules on lances Or, in base a triplemount Vert fimbriated Or.
Meaning:
Iphofen gained city rights in 1293. The oldest city seals with prints from 1336 and 1469 displayed the half profile of a bishop with mitre and crozier. The current pattern appeared first on a secret seal from 1390 with prints since 1430. The flags are alluding to the Bishops of Würzburg as local rulers. The morion, usually an iron cap for foot soldiers is considered to be a symbol of the citizens' militia, being independent from the bishopric. The morion sometimes is depicted silver. Its Spanish version, also called Moore's cap (German: Maurenkappe) became a part of the arms after 1965. It appeared first on a capstone of the local church from 1594. Also the triplemount, alluding to local viticulture, was embedded after 1965. It also appeared on local seals from the 19th century, when the morion was considered to be a simple trilby hat.
