In a silver (= white) shield is a black 5-point star. Within the star is another silver (= white) 5-point star.
Meaning:
The star is taken from the arms of the Lords of Hewen, who owned the city until 1398, when it became a possession of Austria. The arms of the Lords of Heven had been divided per fess into black over gold (= yellow), above was a silver (= white) star. The star already appeared in the oldest known seal of the city from the late 14th century. The current colours are known since 1591. The present coat of arms was based on this seal and approved in 1960. From 1898-1960 the city used arms divided of silver (=white) and blue with the star in counterchanged colours. The colours were derived from the arms of the Lords of Fürstenberg, but these never ruled the city.
