Shield Azure, a throughout cross faceted Argent, in dexter chief a ball Argent.
Meaning:
A royal court was given to the Bishopric of Speyer in 1056. In the middle of 13th century it became an urban settlement. In the oldest arms with seal prints since 1270 the cross from the arms of the Bishopric of Speyer appeared alone. This pattern appeared also on two seals from the first half of the 14th century. The ball as a distinguishing mark appeared first on a city seal, proven since 1447, but probably made around 1400. Bishop Damian Hugo of Schönborn (1719 - 1743) moved his seat away from Philippsburg to Bruchsal.
