Description of coat of arms:
In a green shield is a golden (= yellow), rampant lion, armed and tongued red.
Meaning:
The town had become a city at the end of the 13th century. The first seal from 1309 displayed two crosses, the attribute of St. Peter, the patron saint of the Bishopric of Minden; the city at the time was ruled by the Bishops of Minden. Around 1300 the Dukes of Lüneburg from the Welfen kin became the only owners of the city. On the second known seal from 1318 already was the Guelfish lion of the Dukes of Lüneburg. The lion was passant in the 14th and 15th century, since the 17th century he is depicted as rampant. The shield is usually topped by a mural crown in stone colour, realized as red. The mural crown is not depicted on the flag.
