Aerzen Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue shield is a golden (= yellow), rampant lion, crowned, armed and tongued red. Beneath the lion the shield is divided by a silver (= white) bar wavy.
Meaning:
The lion is taken from the arms of the Counts of Everstein who ruled the area from 1033-1425. They made Aerzen their administrative centre and seat of a court. Their heirs were the Guelfish Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. The granted the title of a market town in 1653. The lion's colours were adapted to those of the Welfen kin. The original lion of Everstein had been silver (= white) with a golden crown. The wavy bar in the base of the shield is symbolizing the little rivers Humme and Grieße.

The arms were approved in 1933 and are based on the old seal of the subcounty (Amt) Aerzen.
