Shield parted of Azure and Vert by a fess wavy Argent, charged with a fish Gules finned Or.
Meaning:
In 1610 Margrave Christian of Brandenburg-Bayreuth granted the rights of a market town. The first town seal included the number of that year. The first seal with the current pattern included the number "1819". The version from 1837 replaced the fess wavy by a normal fess covered with wavy lines. Fess wavy and fish are representing the Saale River. In 1844 the town gained city rights due to the beginning industrialisation.

The arms were granted on 25 April 1610 by Margrave Christian of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, approved by Minister of Interior of Bayern in 1818 and confirmed on 28 September 1837 by King Ludwig I of Bayern.
