In a golden (= yellow) shield is a black eagle armed red holding a silver (= white) key with his beak.
Meaning:
Wimpfen gained city rights in 1220 and became an Imperial City in the early 14th century. The eagle and key first appear on prints of the seal of the city since 1250. The key is derived from the arms of the Bishopric of Worms as an attribute of its patron saint St.Peter, for the city had been founded in an area bought by the Staufen Dukes of Swabia from the bishopric. On seals from the 14th century the key was held by the eagle's claws. According to Stadler the eagle here is symbolizing the Staufen kin. He is no imperial eagle. All later seals and images until 1803 showed the same arms. In 1803 the city became part of Hesse and the arms were changed. The new arms displayed a demi-eagle couped per pale and the striped lion of Hesse. When the city became part of Baden-Württemberg, the old arms were restored. The colours of the sheet are alluding to Hesse.
