Shield Or, a saint statant, nimbed Or, dressed Argent and coated Gules , holding a gridiron Sable in his right hand and a book Argent, charged with a Latin cross Or, in his left hand.
Meaning:
The town had been a condominion of the Counts, later Princes, of Hohenlohe and the Archbishops of Mainz from 1326 until 1799. The latter obtained city rights for Niedernhall, granted in 1356 by Emperor Karl IV. Due to the existence of two co-rulers no arms based on the rulers had been established. St. Lawrence, recognisable by his attribute the gridiron, had been the local patron saint and his image appeared on local seals since the 15th century. The tinctures had been unknown, the coat of the saint obviously had been blue before, and acc. to Klemens Stadler thus the former flag had been a, probably plain, blue-white bicolour.
