It is a black over yellow horizontal bicolour. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flag.

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) shield is a black, rampant lion tongued red. The lion is topped by a black attire.
Meaning:
The county was enlarged 1937, when the subcounty (Oberamt) Geislingen upon Steige was incorporated. The arms display the lion of Staufen in order to stress that most parts of the county had been dominions of the Staufen kin in the middle ages. The kin founded Göppingen and its ancestral seat Hohenstaufen castle was located just above Göppingen. The castle had been destroyed in 1525. In 1319 the area became a possession of the Counts of Württemberg, which is symbolized by the attire.

The coat of arms was adopted in 1927 and is one of the oldest county arms in Germany. The dates of approval of coat of amrs and flag/banner are not known. Stefan Schwoon and Falko Schmidt reported in 2001 that the county then didn't have a flag.
