Coat of Arms

Shield Gules with bordure Argent, a knight's half length portrait exceeding into the bordure, the knight is dressed in clad armour Argent.
Meaning:
Wanfried received market and city rights in 1608 by Margrave Moritz of Hesse, but the oldest seal already dates from 1578. The seal displayed a knight statant with sword and spear. Ever since the knight has been the arms of the city. The half length portrait has been in use since the end of the 19th century, the bordure had been added after 1967. The origin of the knight is not known. It has been stated in a document from 1613 that it is St. Boniface , but this is not likely. It has also been explained as a canting symbol ("Wahr'n Fried", or "Keep the peace!"), but the origin remains uncertain.
