Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, an embattled wall Argent with port Gules, crowned by two towers Argent with windows Sable, in central chief an impending ash branch Vert.
Meaning:
Eschwege became a city in the early 13th century. Since the oldest known seal, mentioned in 1261 and testified in 1282 all later seals displayed the embattled wall with two towers. In the 16th century the canting ash (German: Esche) branch was added. In armourials since 1605 the branch alone is depicted as coat of arms. Since 1884 the city uses the current arms, overtaking the elements of the secret seal from 1583. It was also found on buildings of 1588 and 1720. Since 1956 it was disputed, whether the branch or the embattled wall with towers was the true coat of arms. Klemens Stadler displayed both joined.
