Description of coat of arms:
Shield Or, a fess Gules crowned by a cross patty of the same.
Meaning:
Gold and red are the colours of the Bishopric of Münster. The arms of Meppen are nearly the same, just the cross patty was added as a distinguishing mark. Meppen gained city rights in 1360, granted by Bishop Adolf of Münster. The bishops bought the region from the Counts of Ravensberg in 1252. A seal was first mentioned in 1383 and its existence had been proven since 1483 by copies.
