Shield Argent, five fleur-de-lis Gules in quincunx, issuant from dexter flanch a chevron Gules, in dexter base a waning crescent Gules.
Meaning:
Wemding gained city rights in 1343. The first city seal with prints since 1367 already displayed the current pattern. The chevron is a differentiation of the arms of the Counts of Oettingen. The fleur-de-lis are taken from the arms of the Landgraviate of Unterelsass (Lower Alsatia). The Oettingen kin gained the landgraviate as a fiefdom in 1340. The crescent probably had been a local symbol. Since 1523 the pattern on local seals was displayed mirrored, sometimes without crescent. In 1818 the chevron was painted blue and the fleur-de-lis golden, but later in the 19th century the red colour was restored.
