Coat of Arms

image from Heraldry of the World, 22 September 2011

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (=yellow) shield is a black, rampant lion armed and tongued red and holding a blue arrow in his right back paw.
Meaning:
According to source Nideggen gained city rights in 1313 from count Gerhard I of Jülich. The oldest seal shows the arms of the counts of Jülich hanging on a hook. The present combination of the lion of Jülich and the arrow dates from the 16th century. Inbetween there had been arms showing the lion in a green field without arrow. The arrow, the local distinguishing mark was added again in 1961 and then also the old tinctures were reestablished.

Banner and coat of arms were approved by Regierungspräsident Köln on 9 November 1976.
