The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a black over yellow horizontal bicolour. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flag.

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) shield is a black, upright paw of a bear armed red.
Meaning:
According to source the paw is taken from the full arms of the counts of Hoya Its existence can be proven on seals since the 17th century. Syke developed around a castle of the counts of Neubruchhausen in the middle of the 13th century and in 1384 became a possession of the counts of Hoya. In the 15th century special rights (German: Weichbildrechte) had been granted, finally in 1929 city rights. Even though the city belonged to the counts of Hoya only until 1582, became then part of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and a dominion of Catholic general Tilly from 1629 - 1631. Nevertheless the arms never changed.

According to Stadler 1970 a plain flag had been approved before in 1953.
