Shield Gules two keys Argent in pale overlapping one another.
Meaning:
In 1291 the German King Rudolf I of Habsburg granted city rights. City, castle and district (German: Amt) belonged to the Archbishopric of Trier until 1794. The first greater city seal from the late 13th century displayed a fortress with three towers and an open gate. The current pattern of the arms appeared first on a local seal of lay judges from the early 14th century. The tinctures red and silver are those of the archbishopric. Since the middle of the 19th century the keys sometimes had been in saltire, sometimes the keys had been blue on a silver or golden background. The keys are attributes of St. Peter, patron saint of the archbishopric.
