Pforzheim Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale. The dexter side displays a golden (= yellow) field divided by a red bend. The sinister side is thrice divided per fess into red over silver (= white)over blue over gold (= yellow).
Meaning:
The city was established by Margrave Hermann V of Baden in 1227. The first seals from 1256 just showed the bend of the margraviate. The current pattern is in use since the end of the 15th century. The dexter side shows the arms of Baden. Also the colours red and gold on the sinister side are alluding to Baden, while the other colours probably allude to the Wittelsbach kin, because Pforzheim belonged to the dominions of the Palatinate from 1463 until 1750. The sequence of the colours on the sinister side was fixed in the 18th century
