Shield Or, issuant from a base wavy Azure a lion rampant Sable, crowned, armed and tongued Gules, superimposed by a bendlet Argent.
Meaning:
The oldest city seal probably was made on occasion of the grant of city rights in 1331. Prints are known since 1360. The lion had no crown and together with the bendlet he was symbolising that the city belonged to the Bishopric of Bamberg. The base wavy is a distinguishing mark and representing the name giving Vils River. A secret seal from the 15th century displayed the same pattern. The crown appeared first in 1603 in the roll of arms of the vassals of the bishopric and in 1605 in the oldest roll of arms of Siebmacher. Since 1819 the images declined. The old pattern was restored in the 20th century.

The banner ha not been approved officially. The arms were re-adopted in 1962 by the city council.
