Marktl Coat of Arms

Under a chief charged with the Bavarian lozenges, Argent, a boathook Sable charged in base with a bar couped Or.
Meaning:
Marktl, also known as Marktl upon Inn, is the birthplace of the Josef Cardinal Ratzinger, Pope [Emeritus] Benedict XVI. It is located 10 km west of the border with Austria and the city of Braunau upon Inn.The election of Ratzinger as Pope awoke this place upon the Inn River and it became a pilgrimage place of many Catholics. The boathook is symbolising the former importance of shipping on the River Inn. The spatula (German: Streichmaß) is symbol for the grain-market, a tool to measure grain and beverages, e.g. wine. The Bavarian lozenges show that it belongs to the Duchy of Bayern. The bar mentioned in source is in fact a measure for grain, vine and woven goods. On the first seal from 1460 there had been no chief and the arms originally were also granted without chief. The chief was added in coloured images since the middle of the 16th century and on seals since around 1600. In the 19th century the basic tincture was painted arbitrarily as red.
