This "sheep's house" flag is one of the best canting flag we have seen until now.
Ivan Sache, 16 January 2001

The canting (both in German and English) may be better than you realize. Schaffhausen ("sca^fa-hausen") means "house of ships", and not sheep house. The canton flag used to be for a while the same as the city flag under the erroneous understanding that it was a "sheep house". See my comments on the canton flag on the Schaffhausen canton page.
T.F. Mills, 16 January 2001

Miscellaneous Pictures

  • Coin (ca. 1180, one-sided) made by the Allerheiligen abbey which had the authority to make coins in Schaffhausen. It shows a ram jumping over a rooftop. This is one of the oldest depictions of the canting emblem Schaf and Haus (see also coins on the canton's page). Location: Münzkabinett, Berlin (source).
  • Third seal of Schaffhausen in use from 1372 to early 15th c. (for all documents), respective end of 17th c. (for very important documents). The earliest document with a Schaffhausen seal is from 1253 (source).
