In earlier times names like -schwand, Schwand(en), Schwände etc. were often misinterpreted as coming from Schwan (swan). This has often turned out to be wrong, much more likely the meaning comes from the old German schwenden which means clearing trees by fire. There is no lake in Schwanden.

Since 1 January 2011 Schwanden is part of Glarus Süd commune.
