Introduction: Winnipeg Blue Bombers
(Winnipeg Tammany Tigers 1913-1929, Winnipegs 1930-1935, Winnipeg Blue Bombers since 1935)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (also known by the nicknames of the "Bombers", the "Blue and Gold", and the "Big Blue" by their fans), are the professional football team headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They compete in the Canadian Football League's West Division. Although football in Winnipeg dates back to the Winnipeg Rugby Football Club (1879-1906), it is not considered part of the current franchise lineage that starts in 1913 with the Winnipeg Tammany Tigers. The Blue Bombers CFL franchise history only dates back to 1930 and they remain one of the three community owned teams that are not privately owned by individual shareholders still playing in the CFL. They first played their home games at Osborne Stadium (1935-1952), then moved to Canad Inns Stadium (1953-2012), then IG Field ("Investor's Group" Field) since 2013. Their teams colours are Royal blue, gold, and white. Their mascots are Buzz and Boomer.
Since their establishment, the Blue Bombers have won the CFL league's Grey Cup championship 12 times (1935, 1939, 1941, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1984, 1988, 1990, 2019, and 2021). In the 2021 CFL season they defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-25 to win the 108th Grey Cup. The team holds the record for most Grey Cup appearances (27) and were the first club in Western Canada to win a championship. The Blue Bombers are now tied with the defunct Ottawa Rough Riders as the second most successful of the CFL teams, with a total of 12 Grey Cup championships victories in 15 championship appearances.

Description of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Flag

[Winnipeg Blue Bombers] image by David Kendall, 25 November 2001

Today (Nov. 25, 2001), my hometown football team, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, will be competing for the CFL (Canadian Football League) trophy (the Grey Cup) in Montreal against the Calgary Stampeders.
I have mentioned a few times the prominence of blue and gold in Manitoba flag proposals, this may be because of the colours of the Blue Bombers football team (blue and gold), which may, in turn be taken from Winnipeg's flag colours.
I post for you all the team flag which I will be carrying a sample of which to wave while watching the game on TV with friends (my wife knows what I like and loves me enough to buy me a genuine cloth version of the flag).
The flag has also been seen prominently on the flagpoles at Portage and Main (the city's main intersection) in the last few days.
You will notice that the flag is in Canadian pale (ie a 1:2 flag with a 1:1 square in the middle), I'm almost positive this is deliberate, to show it is a Canadian team.
Unfortunately, like almost all flags with writing and logos (which this is pretty much both), it is not reversible, and the mirror image is on the reverse of the flag.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have had over nine primary logos since 1935 with many variants, too many to show here. But for you enthusiasts, I recommend you visit This website.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers Commemorative Flags

These two vertical commemorative garden flags celebrate the 12 Grey Cup championships of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the equivalent of 12 American NFL Superbowl victories.

There are naturally many individual horizontal flags honoring the Blue and Gold's impressive string of championship victories, this flag dating from the 108th Grey Cup is an example. They had a "two-peat" going as they had won the Blue Cups both in 2020 and 2021 and were gunning to successfully pull off a "three-peat" in 2022 which would have been only the sixth time any team won three consecutive Grey Cups in CFL history. Although favored, they faced the Toronto Argos who had won the cup 17 times in the past. But it wasn't meant to be for the "Big Blue" and the Argos pulled a one-point win in the 109th Grey Cup, taking down the Bombers 24-23.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers Fan Flags

Both of these use common design elements used on commercial Bomber fan flags: the letter block "W" motif, and the Bomber team colours of Royal blue, gold, and white. They are made by several flag manufacturers with various different widths of horizontal striping and fields.

Blue and Gold Fan flags are also available with various horizontal strip patterns and design elements as illustrated with the first these two flags. The second is a hybrid mixture that introduces the team "helmet-style" into the design mix.

The helmet-style flags done in the team colors with different field designs are made for most CFL teams and have become very popular in recent years. Here are two examples.

These two Bomber fan flags are less for display at games or on flag poles, but more suitable for the home "man cave" use. The "Sundays are for Bombers" flag is being made for other CFL teams, naturally with varying team names, days, and colors.

These flags incorporate the use of the third type of Winnipeg Blue Bombers logos in their designs. Once again the design detailing will differs with the manufacturers interpretations.
