The flag of Tatui is the municipal coat of arms on a white field. The coat
of arms is divided per fess, the upper half then divided per pale. Dexter
chief, yellow with an armadillo (Portuguese, tatu) proper above a blue bar
wavy, a canting charge for the name Tatuhy, meaning "river of the
armadillo;" on an escutcheon in dexter chief the arms of Cuiabá--white with
a mountain proper standing on a green base--commemorating the home of the
founder of the settlement. Sinister chief, blue with the arms of the
Carmelite order, a mountain proper surmounted by a Latin cross silver
between two five-pointed silver stars, with a third star on the mountain and
a white crescent above the cross, the town having been founded on land
originally granted to a Carmelite abbey. Base, red with a gold
triple-towered castle, recalling the Tatuian sacrifices in the war against
Paraguay. For crest, above a gold mural crown with three visible towers, a
gold demi-lion charged on the shoulder with a red fleur-de-lis. The motto
is Per ardva surrexi (I conquer by my own strength), another reference to
the war with Paraguay. The shield is flanked by branches of coffee and
cotton; below the shield is a gear.
