Description of the Flag

The municipality of Marabá Paulista (4,812 inhabitants in 2010; 91,712 ha) is located in southwestern São Paulo State, 640 km of São Paulo.

Marabá Paulista originates in the village of Areia Dourada (Golden Sand), formed in 1938 on the municipal territory of Presidente Venceslau, around the Santo Antônio and Ribeirão das Antas estates. Colonists from northeastern Brazil initiated there cultivation of cotton, and were subsequently joined by merchants of Spanish, Italian and Japanese origin. The district of Areia Dourada was established by Decree-Law No. 14,334 of 30 November 1944. The municipality of Marabá Paulista was established in 1953 and inaugurated on 1 January 1954. "Marabá" means "a person of mixed Indian-European origin".

The symbols of Marabá Paulista were adopted in the early 1980s through a public contest managed by the Marabá Paulista State School.

The flag was designed by José Pereira de Souza. The flag is blue with a yellow-red-yellow saltire. In the middle of the flag is placed a yellow disk charged with the municipal coat of arms.

Accordingly, there are two variants of the flag, one with the stripes of the saltire of equal width, and one with the red stripe broader.

The coat of arms was designed by Raimundo Lima Brás. The coat of arms is "Or a plant of cotton cantonned in chief by two hunting horns gules and in base by two plows sable, a bordure azure charged with eight cotton bolls. The shield surmounted by a mural crown argent ports sable. The shield supported by two field workers. Beneath the shield a scroll gules charged with the municipality's name surrounded by the years '1944' and '1963' all argent".

Cotton was the first crop grown in the municipality. The horns and the plows represent cattle breeding and agriculture, respectively.
