The municipality of Presidente Nereu (2,284 inhabitants in 2010; 22,467 ha)
is located 170 km west of Florianópolis.
President Nereu was named for
Nereu Ramos (1888-1958), the only Santa Catarina-born President of Brazil
(1955-1956), when the municipality was established on 30 December 1961.

The flag and arms of Presidente Nereu are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 5
promulgated on 30 June 1976.
Article 2.
The coat of arms shall have
the following characteristic and meaning.
A - An emblem argent charged in the
center with the tower of the municipality's main religious temple, surmounted by
a cross, meaning the faith of the people of Presidente Nereu.
B - River
Naufrágio crossing the emblem, symbolizing the abundance in water in the
municipality and soil fertility.
C - A huge tree on the river bank,
symbolizing the immense forests suitable for extraction of the most prized and
diverse timberwood species.
D - A pile of earth representing the mining
resources of the municipalities, such as marble, manganese, oil etc.
E - On
top of the emblem, a celestial blue star announcing the constant renewal of an
era of progress and achievement in Presidente Nereu, thanks to the inhabitants'
contribution.
F - In base, a scroll on a pedestal, celestial blue, supporting
the emblem, inscribed "PRESIDENT NEREU - TERRA PROMSSORA" [Promising Land].
Article 2.
The flag representing the municipality is composed of a
rectangle in the same dimensions as the national flag, with the two sides
exactly equivalent, charged in the center with the coat of arms on a white
field, symbolizing peace and harmony.
