The municipality of Ipira (4,752 inhabitants in 2010; 15,030 ha) is located
450 km west of Florianópolis.
Ipira was named for two Tupi-Guarani words,
"i", meaning "water", and "pira", meaning "fish". This is a translation from the
original name of Colônia do Rio do Peixe (Fish River Colony), established in the
1910s by colonists coming from the town of Montenegro and other places of Rio
Grande do Sul.
The district of Ipira was established in 1924, depending on
Cruzeiro (today, Joaçaba) and successively transferred to Concórdia (1934),
Campos Novos (1938), Piratuba (1949), and, eventually Peritiba (1962).
The
municipality of Ipira was established by State Law No. 888 promulgated on 14
June 1963 and inaugurated on 15 August 1963.
