The municipality of Barra Velha (29,168 inhabitants in 2019; 13,915 ha) is located 120 km north of Florianópolis.

The flag and arms of Barra Velha are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 42
promulgated on 17 May 1972.
Article 1.
The arms of the municipality of
Barra Velha are composed of:
1 - A mural crown proper to municipalities, with
five towers, representing a town.
2 - A Portuguese shield divided in four
quarters.
3 - In the center of the first quarter, the schematic
representation of a nave with furled sails sailing on deep sea, as a tribute to
the first settlers.
4 - Dexter in the second and third quarters, rice, and
sinister, in the third quarter, cassava, which are two of the main products of
local agriculture.
5 - In counter-chief a schematic landscape, composed of a
sky, clouds, rising sun, sea, beach and respective buildings, hill ensigned by a
Christ with open arms, and lagoon, surrounding greening areas, representing
tourism as a big source of income for the municipality.
6 - In the
counter-chief's external and internal parts, a scroll inscribed with the
municipality's name and date of creation.
7 - Between the counter-chief and
the scroll, a maritime landscape representing the abundance and diversity of
fishing widely practiced on the seashore.
8 - As supporters, two schematized
dolphins, as the guardians of a rich and diverse maritime fauna.
Article
2.
The colors of the municipal flag shall be blue and white.
1 - White in
a transversal, oblique stripe.
2 - Blue, forming two triangles on each side
of the white field.
3 - In the center, overlapping the two colors shall be
placed the municipal coat of arms.
