The municipality of São José do Herval (2,568 inhabitants; 10,152 ha)is
located 250 km north of Porto Alegre.
São José do Herval was originally
known as Burro Morto (Dead Donkey), being a resting place for tropeiros and
muleteers heading from Lajeado to Soledade. The settlement was subsequently
renamed for its patron saint, St. Joseph, and mat ("erva-mate") cultivation.
