Municipality

The municipality of Porto Mauá (2,802 inhabitants; 10,600 ha) is located on the border with Argentina, here river Uruguai, 540 km north-west of Porto Alegre. A ferry allows crossing the river to reach the Argentine sister town, Alba Posse.

Porto Mauá is named for Irineu Evangelista de Souza, Baron and Viscount of Mauá (1813-1889). A banker, industrialist and shipowner, the baron significantly contributed to the industrialization of the Brazilian Empire; he established Brazil's first shipyard and first railway line and initiated the exploration of rivers Amazon and Guaíba (Rio Grande do Sul) with steamboats.

Symbols

The flag of Porto Mauá is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 40 promulgated on 4 August 1993.

Article 1.
I. The flag shall be composed of three panels, blue, red and yellow, in usual shades, rectangular, in dimension 0.45 cm in width on 1.93 m in length.
II. The flag shall be charged in the center, on the yellow stripe, with a white ellipse, of 0.45 cm in maximum width, featuring the coat of arms of the municipality.
III. The two sides of the flag shall be exactly the same, mirroring each other.

Article 2.
The flag's width shall be 140 units; its length shall be 200 units.

The coat of arms of Porto Mauá is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 39 promulgated on 4 August 1993.

Article 1.
Shield divided into three parts. Surmounted by a four-towered mural crown or, which symbolizes the town's sovereignty. In base, on a field azure, an anchor argent, symbolizing a port town. Dexter, a field gules red charged with a winged helmet or, symbolizing commerce strongly established in the municipality. Sinister, soybean and maize plants proper on a white field, representing crops. The shield surrounded by golden columns ensigned with Brazilian and Argentine symbols, ideologically symbolizing a bridge that integrates the two sister towns. The arrangement of the colors refers to the national and state colors. A scroll inscribed "FRONTEIRA DA INTEGRAÇÃO" with the date of creation, "20/03/92".

Article 2.
The coat of arms shall be used in the center of the flag of the municipality and on official documents.
The coat of arms, when used on the municipal flag, should not be wider than the central stripe and shall be inscribed on a white oval field.
