I have not found any explanation about flag or the coat of arms. The name
Nicolau Vergueiro may or may not linked to Nicolau Pereira de Campos_Vergueiro (http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolau_Pereira_de_Campos_Vergueiro)
a Brazilian politician born in Portugal in the 18th century.

The Guerra dos Farrapos went on in this part of the world. A painting by Guilherme Litran depicting the Farrapos ('Ragamuffins') shows them with black-red-gold pennants. I was wondering whether this was a flag we know little of, but found nothing more than a similar painting at http://estudebemaqui.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/revolucao-farroupilha.html. However, the footnote at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Ragamuffins says:
It is noteworthy that the pennons flying from the cavalrymen's lances are not the Green, Red and Yellow Flag of the Riograndense Republic, but the Black, Red and Gold of the Flag of Germany, at this time a brand-new creation which got wide fame, far outside the boundaries of Germany, through the 1832 Hambach Festival. And at this time it was considered very much a revolutionary flag, standing for Liberty and Civil Rights as much as it stood for German Nationalism.Jonathan Dixon, 2 March 2012
