The municipality of Ilópolis (4,098 inhabitants in 2010; 116 sq. km) is located in northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, 200 km of Porto Alegre. Ilópolis means "Yerba mate Town", from Latin _Ilex_ (yerba mate being _Ilex paraguariensis_) and Greek "polis", "a town". The municipality of Ilópolis was established by State Law No. 4,687 of 26 December 1963, seceding from Encantado, following a plebiscite prescribed by State Law No. 4,612 of 21 November 1963 and held on 8 December 1963
The flag of Ilópolis is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 111 of 16 May 1975. Green represents the fertility of the soil and the hope in the growth of the municipality. White conveys a message of peace from the inhabitants.
The coat of arms of Ilópolis is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 1,248
of 10 October 2001.
Three out of the four towers of the mural crown symbolize the three
powers (executive, legislative and judiciary), while the fourth tower
symbolize the people.
The book is a symbol of culture. The cross is a symbol of the
Christian faith. The araucaria represents the forests.
The shield is surrounded by branches of yerba mate, the namesake of
the municipality.
The scroll is inscribed with the date of political and administrative
emancipation of the municipality ("26.12.1963").
