The district of Bella Vista was established on 12 June 1905 within the municipality of Alfredo Chaves (now, Veranópolis), to be renamed to Fagundes Varela in 1938. The municipality of Fagundes Varela was established by State Law No. 8,460 promulgated on 8 December 1987.

Fagundes Varela (1841-1875), born from an affluent family in Rio, preferred literature and bohemian life to law studies, publishing his first poems, "Noturnas", in 1861. His marriage with a circus artist caused a family scandal and increased his poverty. The death of his first son, Emiliano, three-months old, inspired the poem "Cântico do Calvário". Alcoholism and errance increased, so did his poetical inspiration; he published "O estandarte auriverde" (The gold and green standard) in 1863, "Vozes da América" in 1864 and, the next year, his masterpiece, "Cantos e fantasias", and maintained his bohemian life until his death.
Varela was named protector of chair No. 11 at the Brazilian Academy of Literature by the academy's founder, Lúcio de Mendonça.
