The municipality of Cacequi (12,705 inhabitants in 2018; 23,732 ha) is
located 400 km north-west of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the
districts of Cacequi (seat), Umbu and Saicã.
Cacequi means in
Tupi-Guarani "Cacique Water" or "Cacique River". The area was fiercely disputed
between Spain and Portugal until definitive incorporation to Portugal in 1801.
Originally part of the municipality of Rio Pardo established on 27 April 1809,
Cacequi was subsequently elevated to a district of São Gabriel. The municipality
of Cacequi was established by State Decree-Law No. 715 promulgated on 28
December 1944, separating from São Gabriel and General Vargas, and inaugurated
on 1 January 1945.

The flag of Cacequi is diagonally divided, per bend, blue-red, with the
municipal coat of arms inscribed in a white disc placed in the center of the
flag.
