The municipality of Barão de Triunfo (7,415 inhabitants in 2016; 43,668 ha)
is located 100 km south-west of Porto Alegre.
Barão de Triunfo was
established in 1889 by Italian, Polish, German, Spanish, Swiss and Austrian
colonists.
The town's namesake is General José Joaquim de Andrade Neves
(1807-1869), Baron of Triunfo.
Andrade Neves served in the Imperial
forces during the Ragamuffin Revolt (1835) as a member of the National Guard,
especially during the attack of Fanfa island that resulted in the capture of
Colonel Bento Gonçalves da Silva. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in
1841, he was invited to join the Army.
In 1851, Andrade Neves led a troop of
volunteers during the war against the Argentine dictator Rosas. In 1864, he
commanded the 3rd Cavalry Brigade during the invasion of Uruguay, seizing the
fortress of Cerro. The next year he marched against Paraguay, seizing Pilar and
defeating a few days later four Paraguayan cavalry regiments. As a reward, he
was elevated to Baron of Triunfo on 19 October 1867.
