The municipality of Alvorada (207,392 inhabitants in 2016; 7,081 ha) is
located 20 km east of Porto Alegre.
Alvorada was established as Passo de
Feijó, a district of Viamão established by Municipal Law No. 216 promulgated on
22 September 1952. The municipality of Alvorada was established by State Law No.
5,026 promulgated on 17 September 1965.
The name of Alvorada ("Dawn") was
coined by a member of the Emancipation Commission, referring to people leaving
the place early in the morning to go to Porto Alegre for work, and to the Palace
of Dawn, the official residence of the President of Brazil inaugurated in
Brasília on 30 June 1958.

The flag also exists as light grey with the municipal coat of arms in the
center, inscribed in a white disc.

The coat of arms of Alvorada is prescribed by Law No. 208 promulgated on 26
January 1977.
Article 2.
The coat of arms is composed of:
a) Three
towers surmounting the coat of arms, as a symbol of power;
b) In the shield,
a sunrise over heights and plains;
c) Sheds and chimneys, representing
industry;
d) Beside, an open book symbolizing education of the youth;
e)
On the shield's sides, roses and carnations, representing horticulture;
f) In
base a scroll showing the emancipation date and the the names of the
municipality and of the state.
