A vertical tricolor of green, yellow and red, apparently 7:10; on the central panel two red crossed oars
on a green mandacaru cactus (Cereus peruvianus). This flag was created in September 1970
by the winner of a competition, Armindo Trajano Maia. It was first hoisted on 1 May 1971
and was adopted by law 26 May 1971. The mandacaru cactus is emblematic of the local shrublands
and the oars stand for the São Francisco River boatmen. As usual, green stands for hope and
agricultural lushness; red symbolizes blood, bravery, and struggle; and yellow represents golden wealth.
