The flag is vertically divided green-white-red, with the municipal coat of
arms in the middle. "RIO VERMELHO-MG" is written in red letters below the
shield, as shown on the photo of the flag available on the municipal website
[and missing from the image above]. Green represents the local vegetation:
fields, savannah and small forests. White refers to peace and fraternity.
Vermilion (red) recalls Rio Vermelho (Vermilion River), the river that crosses
the municipal territory from east to west and was named after the reddish shade
of its water.
The municipal coat of arms is red with the parish church,
representing faith, a millet plant and a bull, representing agriculture and
cattle-breeding. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown with five towers, all
white masoned red. The coat of arms is said to have been "founded" in 1617, when
Maria I was Queen of Portugal. There is something wrong in this statement, since
Maria I reigned from 1777 to 1816. In 1617, the Portugal was ruled by Philip II
of Spain. Moreover, the historical record available on the municipal website
says that the settlement of Rio Vermleho was recognized in 1776, the parish
being erected on 5 April 1810. The municipality was created on 17 December 1938
by State Law No. 148.
