The idea to adopt a flag is attributed to Paulino Luiz de Freitas, who
became prefect in 1971. The flag is a horizontal tricolor, green, white,
and red, the three colors referring to the three traditional organizations
of Martinho Campos: the União Football Club, Abadia Football Club, and
Ipiranga Sports Club. On the center of the white stripe, which is wider
than the other two, is the municipal coat of arms flanked by branches of
wheat, sugar-cane, rice, and beans. The coat of arms is divided per fess,
the chief yellow (for mineral wealth) with a red triangle
(the emblem of the
state of Minas Gerais); the base blue with the São Francisco and Pará rivers
depicted in white. Overall on a black fess are the words Decus et Labore
in gold letters. The coat of arms is ensigned by the crown of Our Lady of
Abadia, while, on the scroll, the name of Martinho Campos appears between
the dates of its establishment as a separate municipality and of the
installation of its first municipal government.
