The flag of Conselheiro Lafaiete was designed by the heraldist Arcinóe
Antônio Peixoto de Faria. It consists of a green field with a red cross,
bordered white, and overall the municipal coat of arms on a white lozenge.
As usual with Peixoto de Faria's designs, the use of a cross to "quarter"
the field is described as following Portuguese traditions for civic flags,
although in fact it does not. The cross is also said to symbolize the
Christian spirit of the people of the municipality. As is also usual for
Peixoto de Faria's statements of symbolism, the coat of arms is supposed to
symbolize the municipal government, the lozenge the city of Conselheiro
Lafaiete proper, the green field the rural areas of the municipality, and
the arms of the cross the radiation of municipal authority throughout the
territory.
