Municipal flag of Zutendaal

The municipal flag of Zutendaal is vertically divided blue-white-red-yellow.
According to Gemeentewapens in België - Vlaanderen en Brussel, the flag was adopted by the Municipal Council on 11 May 1987, confirmed by the Executive of Flanders on 1 March 1988 and published in the Belgian official gazette on 16 September 1988.
The colours of the flag are taken from the municipal arms.

The arms of Zutendaal are "Per pale, barully or and gules ten pieces, azure a Blessed Virgin with Baby Jesus all or nimbed argent and surrounded by mullets of the same".
The dexter part of the arms, as commonly used in the municipal heraldry in Limburg, recalls that Zutendaal once belonged to the County of Loon, while the sinister part recalls that Zutendaal has been a popular place of a Marian pilgrimage for ages. When the building of the church started, it was found every morning that what had been built the former day had disappeared during the night. A farmer saw in the center of the village a light, which he interpreted as a good omen, and it was decided to attempt to move the building site of the church where he had seen the light. The miraculous statue was found during the building site, which attracted more and more pilgrims to Zutendaal.
