Bužim was the pre-Ottoman period in the centre of the Croatian Kingdom; the later famous Jelačić family was originally from Bužim and had the nobility title "de Bužim" (Bužimski). The old fortress was built in 1251. The 18th century wooden mosque build under the town is claimed to be the oldest preserved wooden mosque in the region.

The coat of arms (municipal website) is prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu općine Bužim (text), adopted on 5 February 1996 by the Municipal Assembly and published on 8 February 1996 in the Municipal official gazette Službeni glasnik Općine Bužim, No. 6.
The coat of arms is described in Article 1 as follows:
In heart-shaped shield shape colored blue, in it dominate four round towers of the old medieval town of Bužim colored cardinal red. In the shield are also incorporated a crescent, a fleur-de-lis, an arm holding a mace (topuz) and a war hammer (nadžak), a knight with flags, sword, crescent and two stars, an arrowhead and two birds all colored golden. The central panel is green and the fields connecting are purplish-pink. Beneath the coat of arms is a green ribbon inscribed white Bužim.
The coat of arms is based on the historical coat of arms of the town, in a modern reinterpetation and with addition of elements.
