Until 1924, when Mattersburg received its town charter, its name was Mattersdorf.
Mattersburg in Croatian: Matrštof, in Hungarian: Nagymarton ("Big Martin")
Mattersburg belonged to the so-called Siebengemeinden (Seven Communities, Hebrew:
Sheva Kehilot), with a special Jewish history (beside Eisenstadt, Deutschkreutz,
Frauenkirchen, Kittsee,
Kobersdorf, Lackenbach). Emigrants from Mattersdorf founded in 1948 the neighbourhood
Kirjat Mattersdorf in Jerusalem (Israel). For more information see

The coat of arms was approved by the town council in June 1972. The
official certificate of grant from
the Burgenland state government, dated July 4, 1973, describes it as a fire hook. The municipality's
website mentions the possibility that the symbol could be a pruning knife, a reminder of the town's time as
the largest wine-growing community in the Holy Roman Empire during the 17th century. The count's coronet is
a reference to the Lords of Mattersburg, who built the castle in the 13th century. City colours: red and
white.
